Sustainable water management in the brewery: Transparency as the key to efficiency

Water is the most important resource in beer production. At the same time, the demands for sustainability, resource efficiency, and transparent consumption data are constantly increasing. This is particularly evident in water-intensive processes: sustainable optimization begins with precise data.

For a brewery, a holistic measurement and monitoring concept was therefore implemented in order to transparently record all water flows in the production process and to optimize them in the long term.

The aim of the project was to make water consumption visible in detail, to better understand consumption patterns and to create a reliable data basis for sustainable decisions.

Comprehensive recording of all water flows

As part of the project, water meters and additional sensors were installed to precisely record water consumption in each step of the beer production process. This resulted, for the first time, in complete transparency regarding all relevant water flows within the production process.

In addition, a dedicated LoRaWANnetwork was set up – including site analysis, gateway installation, and on-site commissioning. Besides water meters, other LoRa-enabled devices can be integrated into the network to centrally collect additional consumption and process data.

Digital analysis and visualization of consumption data

The collected data is transferred to the INFINIO platform and visualized in the STREAM module. Water consumption and process relationships can be transparently displayed and analyzed using graphical evaluations and a central overview diagram.

This allows deviations, unnecessary consumption and optimization potential to be identified early.

Basis for sustainable optimization and AWS certification

Thanks to the data transparency created, the brewery now has a solid foundation for sustainable efficiency improvements and future-proof water management.

At the same time, the project forms the basis for possible certification according to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard – an important step towards responsible management of water resources.

Transparency creates sustainable processes

The project demonstrates how digital infrastructure, modern sensor technology and intelligent data analysis can help companies to manage resources effectively, reduce consumption and ensure sustainable processes in the long term.
