The EU Methane Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 entered into force on August 4, 2024; additional obligations will come into effect gradually. Gas network operators must systematically monitor methane emissions, detect and eliminate leaks, and document and report emissions. Flaring gas, for example during maintenance and repair work, is now only permitted in exceptional cases. This is precisely where GWF comes in: with methane gas detectors that detect emissions quickly and continuously and can be integrated into LoRaWANnetworks.
The simplest, most robust, and most secure method is via an optical absolute encoder meter. It records the meter reading absolutely, without relying on error-prone pulses, and transmits it to a communication module that is attached directly to the meter. Common communication protocols such as wireless M-Bus or LoRaWANare supported. This enables all standard reading scenarios: walk-by and drive-by, fixed network, and connection to a smart meter gateway. GWF offers precisely this solution with the AE5 absolute encoder meter and the corresponding communication modules, all from a single source.
Anyone preparing a gas network for hydrogen should systematically check all components for hydrogen compatibility: pipes, fittings, pressure regulators, and meters. For metering equipment, it is crucial to determine whether devices are designed for blends or for operation with up to 100 percent hydrogen; the manufacturer's declarations are authoritative. Since hydrogen has a lower density and a different energy content than natural gas, metering ranges and billing processes must also be reviewed. A phased approach during planned meter replacements reduces conversion costs. GWF gas meters and pressure regulators are already suitable for use with up to 100 percent hydrogen.
Gas pressure regulation ensures that gas always arrives at the end consumer at the correct pressure, from the transmission network. In pressure regulating stations, the high pressure of the upstream network level is gradually reduced to medium and low pressure and maintained constant, regardless of fluctuations in consumption or inlet pressure. Reliable gas pressure regulation is therefore crucial for security of supply, the protection of downstream equipment, and the safe operation of gas appliances.
